Word Around Town

“My personal experience working with Jill as a video production professional was a delight.  Jill Newman, always a stickler for attention to detail and clarity, is also very intuitive in her ability to reflect the director’s desires while editing!  In a relatively short interview she was able to determine how I wanted to present my artists and what the goal of the promotional video would be, matching my vision for our production collaboration.  Amazingly she was able to edit my 14 hours of video to the required 16 minutes while capturing   the essence of 27 talented artists on the NorthCoast Artists’ Studio Tour for 2011!  Thank you, also, Jill, for mentoring me at Community Media Center of the North Bay. I miss your ready answers to my frustrations in the editing suite!

“I met Jill back in the summer of 2009 at the Russian River Brewing where we were both attending a show featuring a local roots rock band called The Aces. I had been friends with the members of the band for quite some time & when we got to talking that evening they mentioned they had recently worked with Jill & recommended I do the same. When I met Jill later that same night I could tell that she was focused, enthusiastic & took her craft very serious.  Upon the band arriving at the studio I could tell right away that Jill was totally in charge of the shoot.  She immediately briefed me & the boys on what to expect & coached us throughout the whole project.  Looking back at my first experience at being filmed for public television I would say that we all had a great time & worked well with each other. Jill handled her crew with authority & respect.  The DVD itself was a great means to book the band there for awhile.  What stood out the most about it was the editing. Jill did an amazing job at weaving in our interview segments at just the precise moments. She really captured our personalities & gave the whole thing a great feel. Think I could speak for the rest of the band & say that we’d be stoked to work with Jill & any crew of hers again…in a downbeat!”

“For a project documenting artists who make big art Jill came to my studio to interview and film me. Her professionalism immediately put me at ease as she explained the process of recording and busied herself expertly setting up equipment.  Conscious of subtle gradations of light she placed me in my element surrounded by tools and metal which framed a good composition. Guiding me through several “takes” she explained how the editing process would use complete sentences that would eventually be woven into a whole. She gently suggested I phrase things differently when needed and reminded me where to focus my attention. On a hot summer day she never complained about the heat and put in long hours after the interview taking film clips of my sculptures, studio surroundings and even my loved pet dog to add a personal touch. When I saw the final edited version I was amazed at how well she integrated imagery with audio and even made me look and sound articulate. Her sensitivity to all aspects of this project proves she is truly an artist herself.

“Jill Newman has the ability to take complex production projects from beginning to end and make them happen with an artistic touch.  An example:  In 2009 she was the supervising producer of a LIVE internet stream of the Handcar Regatta in Santa Rosa, California.   She organized well over 30 staff and volunteer producers for this multi-camera shoot in a very difficult railroad track location.   The 7 hour (!) transmission was enhanced by her innovation of having several 3 person video crews capture short reports throughout the festival with in-camera edits.   It took perseverance and tremendous attention to detail, but at the end of that 15 hour day Jill could proudly say that she had successfully led the team through the most demanding project the Community Media Center had ever attempted.

“I need to convey that Jill is a magical  producer, director, camera jock, lighting tech, post video editor, master herder of cats and/or musicians.  Jill and her crew will get the great shots and everybody goes home happy.  George Lucas would be happy and honored to have Jill on his team. You can quote me.”
